Stefaan lives in a village located on the boarder or the Overberg and Klein Karoo regions of the Western Cape Province in South Africa.
Barrydale was named after James Barry, who gave name to the Joseph Barry Brandy and, in 2003, was voted the best in the world.
Barrydale is situated at the northern end of the Tradouw`s pass which winds it’s way through the Overberg Mountains to the town of Swellendam.
In 1878 when land was purchased to build a Church, the farmers in the area were encouraged to plant vineyards and orchards, it was evident that a winery and distillery would follow. Before long the Barrydale Kooperatiewe Wynkelder was formed, giving rise a prosperous wine industry.
Since the warm temperatures of the region is so perfect for growing fruit, the Tradouw Valley gave rise to apples, pears and oranges orchards for the winter harvests and apricots, figs, cling peaches and grapes for the Summer harvests.
Stefaan`s father, Christo Hanekom - a prominent farmer from the Northern farming regions of South Africa, moved down to the Easter Cape to join the Tradouw farmers and father developed Route 62. A magical place called Tradouw Valley, rich in a mixture of Vineyards, fruit orchards and milk production.
Stefaan was born in barrtdale and spent his youth exploring the farm, exploring all it’s beauti and secrets treasures... It did`nt take long for Stefaan to turn to photography to capture the essence of Barrydale, it’s wealth in history and the history of the Koisan tribe... and all the unique treasures of the Overberg Mountains.
