Artist-in-Action. I am always happy to share my secrets to a successful painting.

During my exhibit in Radio Kootwijk, I had the opportunity to demonstrate a few of my techniques.

“Working directly from nature is so important to me and contributes to the high standard of my work. I also take great pride in obtaining technical accuracy, while maintaining a steady signature.”

“My research methods range from, taking my own photographs, to making thousands of pencil sketches and even water colour or acrylic paintings, before I design my final pieces.

When it comes to sculpture, I even design the working drawings of my casting methods. Crazy as it may seem, the casting methods I as much an integral part of the creative process.

In the panoramic portrait painting, below: I undertook many boat trips out to sea and even learned about sailing. I became a regular face at the yacht club and spent many hours dangling my feet off the pier at the mouth to Port Elizabeth Harbor.

This beautiful 1 x 2.5 meter panoramic view of P.E. Harbor was completed within a record braking 18 months.”

The TonkinsonFineArt Studio in total turmoil.

“This is 1.5 x1.9 meter, palette knife work, which took - 3 years to complete.

I had to make and prepare this unusual size canvas myself. It took 3 days to assemble and almost 3 months to cure, size and prime.

This oil painting matured from a collective contribution of left over studio oil paints form the Tonkinson Fine Art Studios, between 2002 and 2005.

In the space of it’s 3 years growth, I received 12 offers to purchase.

“One photograph, just is not enough reference, for me to create a good 3-dimensional work of art. This does not only apply to my sculptures, but also my drawings and paintings.

Unfortunately, having specialized in portraiture, I don’t always get a wide selection of reference to work from. In such cases I have to rely on my memory, first impression and feelings to create a good artwork.

Texture and attitude, become essential in my finished product.

Pigasus is a gift for my two children. The original concept to my children’s story book is very simple....Petticus derived from ( Petticoat ), is the main character in the story.

One night, deep in the forest, Petticus  accidentally eats a magic wild mushrooms and her wish comes true, but pigs don’t fly or do they ? ...  “
