Monsieur Du Pompitout

M.DuPompidu

This painting was a lot of fun.

It is an oil painting on canvas, depicting- a spontaneous portrait on the back of a folded letter. .

I was inspired by a very active and bubbly character in the local pub-lunch-bar near my home. He was always there, always knew everyone by their first name, had a joke, a prank or a gag in one pocket, with a beer in the other.

One might be disgusted by a drunk shouting his mouth off and loudly claiming his audience, almost every day, but, this man was special for beneath his loud, clown like exterior, was a great soul.

Even those people who met him for the first time would soon feel the touch of a gentle soul who would fetch a mountain for any one in need.

He had no shortage of money, either. This was just his way of making the world a better place for everyone. We referred to him as “Live Entertainment “ and we loved it. ..

This is a very unique approach to portraiture, in that we decided to included a reference to Bob and Els’ love for their garden.

In the far left corner of this painting is a a wild bird, known to the family as “Janus”, who regularly visits them for a treat.

Every portrait is so different from the previous. I have been painting portraits since 1981, for over 25 years, and I still find that each and every painting has a new set of challenges, decisions and it’s very own colour palette.

My favorite part of the portrait process is, researching my client.

Re-creating a personality on a canvas takes a special type of skill. One not only has to capture the essence of ones subject, but often compile a sort of character or collective characteristic image. This form of portraiture has an end result which portrays the personality of the person, over and above the actual visual representation of a person.

Using a well placed dimple, a portion of a frown, the environment, clothing, head dress and even the facial-angle choice, can further enhance the personality of ones subject.

Finding the right setting to hold this all together, is the greatest challenge of all.

Portrait of the wildlife hunter Andreas with his prize Kudzu bull.

Sporting portraits are quite a challenge.

It all comes down to the final choice of composition.

If it works, I use it.

Another good aspect is to use colours, that suit the mood of the subjects in your painting.

I just love these this type of commission.

It is like reviving the past and bringing it forward for the next generation to enjoy.

We are all fully aware of the fact that, photographs get lost and inherited painting may find a quiet place in a remote part of a home, but are we in agreement that, paintings do live foreverHanekomPhoto

This old and partly damaged reference was revived in sepia - style. People often remember a specific characteristic in a person.

In this commission, it is his eyes.

Quote... “ A special sanctum is the Mary-Rose Dold Room where there is a selection of her graphic works for sale in aid of the gallery.

She’s one of Hugh’s favorite artists – and he went home with two of her pictures under his arm.

And Mary-Rose herself was queen of the night.

She was asked to unveil a large picture which turned out to be a specially commissioned portrait of her by Leoné Tonkinson who had borrowed photographs and consulted family and friends to date it back a decade or two before Mary-Rose’s hair turned to silver .

As you can see from the picture, it’s a telling likeness and a worthy addition to the gallery hall of heroes. “... unquote.                               the Herald Newspaper in Port Elizabeth

About my childhood drawings :

From the age of about 4 years , I realized that drawing did not only succeed from a pencil, but that the use of an eraser or a selection of erasers - produced exciting results.

This was a very big turning point becoming an artist.

Between 1982 -1995 Leonè completed a total of 163 Departmental portraits, for tabloids, press releases and publications.

Many of my clients are over whelmed by the quantity of work that I have on display on my web site

.... personally I feel honoured to be one of the few artists who has managed to make oil painting a full-time career.

In these last 4 months of my 2 year Sabbatical, I have been experimenting with oil painting sketches.

..and now I find myself at a loss for words....

I find it difficult to explain to you where I am going or what my methodology has become...

The purpose of a Sabbatical is to expose yourself to all that is around you.

To allow yourself to grow from these influences and you new found knowledge...

Perhaps it is too soon...

I have to admit - I do feel a sort of freedom, or should I call it confidence, in my brush mark

Most artists feel the need to choose one theme or to select a limited palette, once they have completed their sabbatical..

Personally, I find that absolutely boring, my adventurous spirit would never allow me such a mundane life sentence.

My use of colour is an expression of the living soul of my subject matter

and

to limit myself to only portraiture is absolutely unthinkable.

Introduction to History of Portraiture

Funeral portrait WIKIPEDIA1

A portrait of a person is an artistic representation of a

person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The artists intention is to displayNetherladish Diptych the likeness, personality, and the mood of the person.

A portrait is not just a copy of what you see, but more-or-less a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter in order to engage the viewer.

Some of the earliest portraits were not paintings of kings and emperors, but were actually funeral portraits. These surviving portrait paintings, have been recorded - to have been found in Egypt and Rome.

Portraiture flourished in Roman sculptures, where sitters demanded realistic portraits, even unflattering ones.

In the 4th century, portraiture was slowly replaced by iconic portraits (An idealized symbol of what that person looked like ), but they did reemerge in the late middle Ages - in the Northern region of France, namely, Burgundy.Elysium-5

One of best examples of a well-known portrait artist of western civilization -is Leonardo da Vinci who painted the Mona Lisa .

With reference to WIKIPEDIA

The oldest know portrait in the world, was just recently found in 2006 by a man called Gérard Jourdy. This portrait was believed to be 27 000 years old and found in Angoulême a town and commune in southwestern France - in the Vilhonneur grotto near Angoulême and is thought to be 27,000-year-old

Portraiture is a very popular commercial industry all over the world.

People enjoy having professionally made family portraits to hang in their homes, or special portraits to commemorate certain events, such as graduations and weddings.

My preference in subject matter will always be portraiture, because buildings and landscapes survive many generations, but people only live for one.

In these two portraits, I used a unique approach. Only the Colours that were relevant to the time period.

I tried to break away from a busy background and rather use back- lighting to focus on the traditional portrait methods of the same time period.

Jackson I

Jackson

This is my favorite portrait of an avid skipper at the Algoa Bay Yacht Club.

It was an early morning sun rise for every one, as skipper and crew prepared their yachts for the morning race. The yacht club was an ant hill of activity.

All the entrants had passed safety inspection, a weak prior. So spirits were high and the tension was almost as tangible as a tent hanging over us.

The sky promised good winds too. All this is not here for you to see, but I do hope it gives you an idea of what a portrait holds. No matter how calm and confident it may appear, to the viewer. ..Needless to say, it was a Great sail ... and the prize giving was celebrated late into the night.
