The Office

A very special  3-dimensional work based on my studies of the Netherlandish Diptych.

The sides of each  wooden panels are covered in gold leafing. The outer presentation in a leather mockup, made from  oils on canvas to look like leather.

This process takes 3 months to dry and was finished off with a Patina.

All artistic works are to some extent, effected by circumstances surrounding the artist and one should assemble these circumstances to shed light on the artist himself.

 If only in an attempt to indicate, not to interpret the mysterious role of a multi-facetted mind.  Even the most determined artist is at the mercy of uncontrollable impulses.

We like to hear everything about a particular artist, because it can teach us a little about the artists choices of  subject matter and subjects of actual works

We need to read all this just as closely, for there is magic in other peoples lives. We can easily obtain first hand documents about the artists life. Photographs, press cuttings, letters and the like, but pictures get lost and information changes with fact.  We can trace addresses, discover names of associate artists and models, even put dates to paintings, but what of the artist’s private life.

The family she came from, her mother, father’s influence and friends. Who did the artists confide in and get inspiration from?   Would a lover deny it in a fortnight.  Who do we believe?   Every destiny is individual and unique, what remains is the search for the truth...

All that truly remains, is a question? Where can we find a closer view of the artists own day, surrounding life and the life through the eyes of the artist, as the artist viewed it.
